Now if Sherlock had said something like this, no, not existential poetry, but words from the heart, powerful and sad and befitting the occasion, then, perhaps, John would have believed them.  To someone like John who knows the true depth of Sherlock’s humanity, Sherlock’s farewell, a cool confession and simple goodbye, had bullshit written all over it.
